Getting Started at The Fire Escape

Welcome everyone! We are two Lutheran pastors who enjoy talking and thinking about God.  The word “theology” can be scary and can conjure images of dudes with big white beards using complicated words.  We want to make theology clear, applicable, and even fun.  We hope you enjoy yourselves, and thanks for spending your time here!

Getting Started With Theology

Quite literally, theology means “God talk.” We are going to talk about God an awful lot here, but that doesn’t mean that we are just going to ramble. Theology also means talking and thinking about God in a clear way. That can be a difficult thing if you are new to theology. If you don’t know where to begin then we recommend that you start with this article that we wrote: Theology 101: How to Begin to Be a Theologian. Remember, theology is also a journey, so we hope that you accompany us.

Where We Have Started & Where We Have Gone

When this blog began, we were both in seminary.  At that time, we started simply with adventures in theology, leaving us wide bounds in which to write.  Both of us have taken positive, little sidequests in our theological journeys, which has resulted in some eclecticism for the blog, and that may be reflected best in our earliest posts.  Over time, it seems, we have started posting more and more about inner-city ministry.  Currently, this is where we are located theologically, especially since both of us are inner-city pastors at the moment.  This does not mean, however, that we won’t continue to practice theological writing eclectically, but it is a fair warning that, for the moment, we have started focusing, more and more, on theology in the context of the inner-city.  Regardless, it is still our hope that you can find some interesting and useful things here.  We’re glad to have you along for our journeys.
